TR2/3/3A Getting difficult to start.

My TR3A was getting more difficult to start. It seemed to be getting worse despite having fixed the float bowl gasket leak.

Had a look at the choke linkage last night and found that the outer part of the cable had slipped through the clamp making the choke totally ineffective. Had to add a piece of packing around the outer to get it to clamp and we are back in business.

May have to look for a clamp on collar if it slips again.

Glad you found it. Around here with the rain and cold, the choke is often a problem when they start starting hard. Yes that little area where the clamp fits and the amount of outer cable sticking past the clamp and the amount of inner cable that sticks out past the outer cable that attaches to the arm is a real science/ART. Plus the length of the lower rod that moves both chokes choke is a sub-science. AND moreover then the whole choke needs to return and shut off, often a pain.

I still do not have mine the way I like on this new project. The front carb was running rich, but I believe a cam lob was gone so that might be my problem for the richness that I could not figure out.

Something like this may be the answer to the slipping problem.

I will throw this out there, to make a simple soft shoe like for a vice. It could be aluminum or copper to conform and grip the outer part of the choke cable but not deform it. Only a suggestion, good luck. Frank

I've kept a loose collection of brass shim stock of various thicknesses in the toolbox for just such issues.

I am thinking of making a bicycle brake type thimble/sleeve to fit on the end of the cable to prevent the outer sliding trough the clamp.

What I fid is working so far.
