Got a call from an old customer, said he had a 66 bug to dispose of and would like to get a few things repaired to make it markeable. Yesterday I loaded the tow bar and headed the mile to his house. Garage door was up and there sat a totally original, unmolested 66 bug. Major problems like horn inop, 40 years of wear on carpets and front seats...etc. Has 122k original with the engine being totally rebuilt at 98k. Purrs like a new one, is still 6 volt with working radio. Its now at my shop. While there he took me to his neighbor's house ans he was widowed two years ago and needs a car gone asap from her garage. Itsa mint condition 450 SEL. Has a dead battery. Silver and like new. Today I go with a new battery and my checkbook. I gotta stop this finding old junk cars:>

Same here! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif I love 560s for that same reason I love the 6 Series Bimmers. They're perfectly proportioned...too big to be a two door, too small to be a four door. Hedonistic self-indulgence at its finest. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Doesn't sound like old junk cars to me!

I am finishing up a restoration on a 66 beetle right now. The long term owner decided to have it restored, even though it was pretty much beyond hope. The beam was rusting off, no heater channels, crash damage, and so on. She took it to a guy out in Virginia, who did a fair to middleing job on the body and paint, and went out of business. (zoning issues, not business issues). So, I get to finish the car. The bumpers don't fit, they re- upholstered the seats even though the drivers seat frame was twisted more than an inch out of line, and would no longer fit the tracks. No interior light, no hazard switch no defrost ducts, no washer system,.... and on and on. Everything I touch on this car I get to re do to some sort of correct standard. ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!! This car is the ultimate PO story, although the PO is the current O, and it is not really her fault, I feel like the clean up is never going to end. I begged her to find a nice 66 at the very beginning of all of this, but no, she had to have THIS car.

My friend Adam has about 15 Beetles littered in his back woods. Tons of parts too. I always wondered why he didn't pull them back out until he mentioned that no matter how much he put into them, they'd only be worth $5,000.

And I agree, the 560 is a great line. I like the SLs, because my Dodge 600ES is intended to be an outright copy. The coupes are pretty, as are the sedans. Those things will also run forever, unlike the newer Mercedes models.

My son-in-law is waiting on his new Lexus to arrive & is driving my 380SL for a few days...folks at his office couldn't believe he collected Mercedes'....actually, gave him several positive comments about it.
