I suspect George Orwell might have been a time traveler from the future. The willingness of our society to voluntarily give up its privacy never ceases to amaze me. Like sending in your DNA to an unregulated company that can keep it for years to come with who knows what effect that may have on you and your descendants. Unbelievable!
 
When I mentioned to my daughter that their Google device is recording and storing everything all the time she said "no it is not it only listens when you say OK Google" and even if it does what does it matter.
She will probable be all in for the Portal because it will be so Convenient.

Not in my house. Need to replace the tape on my laptop camera.

Yeah. Even though mic and camera are turned OFF, with my experience with MS on honoring your settings, I, too, have tape over the laptop camera, which is the only on-line device with a camera even available. Not one of the PC's have a camera even plugged in.

My camera stays taped unless I'm doing Skype with someone. Also, computer goes OFF when not in use.
 
I wonder if there's *another* camera built in that you don't know about ...

Don't be too sure about that.

My laptop, running Windows 10 turns itself on all by itself even though I totally shut it down during the day.

Just last night about 12:30 AM I was reading and I heard a little ding coming from my laptop. Lo and behold! The light that comes on when it is running was lit.
This morning after I got up, I started the laptop. The battery indicated it needed 2 hours to recharge.

After doing some research I find that Windows 10 comes programed to start itself at strange hours and then check for updates on the web.
This self starting feature can be turned off by going into its operating area but it is kind of a PITA.
 
If you've a broadband connection, you're being watched. The ISP's are being consolidated and subject to scrutiny. Be aware.

Haven't had that issue with my iMac so far. When I shut it off it stays off until I turn in on with the power button.
 
My son makes the point that as a child he was taught 2 things. 1. Never meet someone you met on the internet. and, 2. Never accept a ride from stangers. - Now with Uber you invite them to your home :rolleyes:

He actually uses a separate phone for facebook

 
Not to worry, there are plenty of schmoes out there waiting to embrace [and be enveloped by] the latest incarnation of social media. It is sad that we have to be perpetually on our guard, but VIRTUAL life unfortunately mirrors [if not amplifies] the dangers found in ACTUAL life. Risk awareness has been important since our beginnings, long before old Ogg grabbed his club on the way out of the cave. Thanx for the tips. :thumbsup:

Interesting that for centuries we've told our kids "don't get involved with strangers".

But now, many folks let them get involved with strangers 24/7. And in their own room, for pete's sake.

Also sad that parents look for "apps" to limit their kids' time online.

Back in the ancient days, parents would say "no", or "not now", and take the device (bicycle, for example). Is that so difficult today?

Today's younger generations have a completely different view of privacy that most of us grew up with. I don't do social media, both because I don't think anyone would be interested in my daily life and because why broadcast the slipups where you do or say something "not that intelligent". I can't grasp those who want to run cams all across their homes and show the world every detail of their daily lives, "every detail"... Didn't mom and dad ever say to folks, there are some things only your life partner should know??

My wife has a Facebook Page but only family and close friends allowed in. She uses it only to post pictures of family outings, etc., but only checks it once or twice a week.
 
I don't have tape over my laptop camera, I keep sticker that says HD webcam stuck over it. I don't understand the fascination with watching what everyone does all the time. I am on social media but only to keep in touch with a few friends and family I otherwise would not be in contact with, I also am a member of a few Facebook groups mostly related to black powder firearms. I think the thing I post most often o facebook are Farside cartoons, that or photos of motorcycles.
