Geography and the "B"

What geographical areas are hotbeds for MGB and MGA fans? Here in Ohio we have a large 300 plus car show (all british, I believe) at the continent every year but it is very rare to see an lbc of any type on the road. You can literally go a whole month in July without seeing any on the road.

I am a service technician with a large electrical contractor and I drive 4-5 thousand miles a month in the summer, so you can't really say that I'm not out looking.

Visiting my uncle in L.A., I see sometimes lots of older cars on the roads but alas no MG's.

So where are the real areas of interst in these beasts?

Ohio seems to have quite a few based on the classifieds I see for MG's (along with Michigan). I took my B out for a drive New Years Eve here in Annapolis and passed 4 B's on the road and an LE in a carport! I couldn't believe it. That's the most I've seen on any given day (other than car shows), but I'm told by a local MG mechanic that there are a bunch around here. I guess there everywhere, but people don't drive them much. Probably more common to see them in CA or FL. I think CA had around half of the total B's imported there.
By the way - GO BUCKS! - I'm an OSU Alum and it was a great night! Where do live in Ohio?

Next door to Ohio in PA we have a good many MG's around. In the Harrisburg area there are two good shows...the British Invasion at Gettysburg is a small but growing show, but the bigger show is in Rothsville (Lancaster County near exit 21 of the Turnpike) in August. I made the mistake of going to Rothsville on the same day that bidding closed for a 74 B I hd looked at...enjoyed the show so much I went home, had a drink and bought my latest!

On the way home from work one day I saw 5 or 6 B's and Midgets going north on rts 11-15...I pulled back the flasher switch and waved out of the sunroof...then embarrasingly realized I was driving the LHS, not my B LOL

When they were originally imported into the docks here in Elizabeth (NJ), we kept as many as possible.

Just kidding of course, but we *do* have 4 MGBs where I work (a community college)plus a few other interesting cars, including my Spridget.

Moss Britfest will be here in the Spring (in Dover, NJ) and we'll probably have 100 various MGs at that event.

I don't see as many on the road as I used to, that's for sure. But our club here in eastern Pa. is 100 members strong, so I know they are out there. New Jersey and New York both have more than one very active club. They all seem to come out for the shows, but I suspect not many (not enough!) are daily drivers in season.

We have several large shows in Florida. Starting in Feb. there's a 250 car show in the West Palm Beach area, one near Orlando in March (200+ cars I think), and a yearly convention that moves around every year - this year in Palm Coast FL (in April) with a bunch of cars. Also several shows in the Panhandle area of FL every year, Tampa FL, and one in the Jacksonville area.

In my neighborhood we have 3 MGBs that I know of, a couple of TR6s, and a couple of Spitfires - and I usually see a variety of MGs, Triumphs, and old Jags on the road daily.

Gary-- all I want from Tony is some pics he said he'd send, they'll show up eventually. Tony, Budweiser and lorasett is a heck of a combo, but I only had to take one pill today. Actually the ankle hurts less today than it has for a long time. I think the doctor did some good

Within a month or two of having minethey started to stand out to me. I've seen 5 MGB's and one sprite within 2 months. and about an hour north of me Tony has enough for the rest of north Alabama. we wouldn't mind If you came to live by us

University Motors is ( I've heard) is going to resume the summer picnic; (right, John?) central Michigan ( Grand Rapids) manages 300+ MGs, the Mad Dogs show near Kalamazoo gets 40+. True, not as many seem to be on the road, maybe thats why the clubs are so popular. I see a lot of Alfas in the Los Angeles, not many MGs though. About 10 years ago, the Brits and Japanese bought a lot of the MGs and took them away.

Have you detected that the prices of the MGs are on the rise?

When you say L.A - I assume you are talking about Los Angeles CA.

If so rest assured that there are hundreds throughout Southern California. But not everybody out here uses their treasures as daily drivers. Mater-a-fact here in San Diego County we have just over 178 registered members in our local MG club. Granted some are Husband & Wife members. But a significant number of the membership has two or more MGs.

On that note - we had just over 100 MGs at the last San Diego British Car Day last October. And just about 70% of those MGs where B’s. Representing just about every year of manufacture. Not a bad showing - considering the total turn out for all the Marques combined was well over 400 cars. And from what I’ve been told the turnouts up in the LA area have much more significant numbers than we do.

Speaking for Ontario...

There are piles of MG's and all sorts of other British cars driving around. Where I live just north of Toronto, in an average summer I see lots of British cars driving around in Barrie (a city of about 115,000 people).

I talked awhile back to a guy from Detroit, and he reckoned that the whole area around Toronto might have one of the largest populations of British cars on the continent. We do host what is probably the biggest all-British car show in North America every September - over 1,000 cars, and there are many active clubs around southwestern Ontario. On almost summer weekend there is probably a British car show of some size somewhere in Ontario. And I can think of at least five British repair garages within an hour radius of Toronto.

Gary earlier mentioned Victoria, BC. I've only been there once when I was a child, but Victoria is talked about in a similar vein to what I said above.
