Generator's off to be tested/rebuilt

I got a good recommendation for a shop to look at my generator, and dropped it off yesterday to be tested. I'm trying to look at this as a chance to finish up some of the other maintenance that needs to be done while the car is off the road--greasing, valves, etc. Drizzly and cool here anyways, so it's not really driving weather.

Let us know what went wrong with it.

They are rather simple & not much usually happens to them.

All this bad generator karma caused the drive end bearing in my TR4's generator to fail today! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I'm still waiting on a replacement air cleaner for my Bugeye (to replace the one that fell off this past Saturday), so tomorrow I'm stuck driving my backup convertable (my 2000 Jeep Wrangler).

Haven't heard anything yet. I'll probably call down to the shop tomorrow and see what's up. Sorry to hear both your LBCs are off the road--nice to have a backup convertible on hand, though!

Talked with the shop today, they are waiting on a few parts and should have it wrapped up early next week. Seems the field(s?) were shot, as was the armature. Not quite sure what these parts are or what they do, but they should all be replaced and ready to go soon.

If the armature was shot, that's basically the entire portion that rotates inside the generator (if I'm not mistaken in this case). That means that it's good you sent it out.

BINGO

Anyone have a good website or book that really explains how a generator works?

Would send you some of my gray stuff, but I need it all.

Google it.
