Generator [Dynamo] bearings

I am looking for a little help diagnosing a problem with the Lucas Generator on my 100. For some time I have had a noise coming from the front of the engine. I tightened the fan-belt and the noise was reduced. I thought this might indicate a problem with the water pump so I replaced it. I found a lot of slack in the keyway in the pulley, so I replaced that, too. I still have a reduced version of the noise! Could it be the bearing at the front of the generator? I do not think it is the rear bushing and the unit is charging OK. Looking forward to any assistance from the forum.

You should be able to quite accurately locate the noise by placing one end of a long screw driver, or similar, with one end on the suspect part & the other end to your ear. Cheap stethoscope. Just make sure to not get the thing into any moving parts.

You would be amazed at how many different sounds you can pick up on various engine parts. A little experimenting should locate the offending part.

Front generator bearings don't last forever.

Pan,
On acceleration or all the time?
Squeal or?
Do you have the original thick belt or a narrower one?
Tried some liquid on the belt to see if it shuts up?

Thanks you for your suggestions, Mr. Russell & zblu.
I had the bearing replaced by an auto electrician anyway.
Dave, I have tried the screw-driver to the ear trick in the past, but you hear so many noises that way it is a bit off-putting!
zblu: I have the original belt, what kind of liquid do you suggest?
