General Motors & Peugeot, all together now...

Didn't GM do this before - with SAAB?
We all know how well that went.

Imth thorry, I thant thay anythin nite now. I juth bith myth thung.

I think GM bought Saab outright, not a partnership? At any rate, I hope this does well. Peugeot have had some great cars, but have been just missing the boat right now.
If they could recreate something like the 205GTI of the 80s / early 90s They'd really be on to a winner.

This makes a fair amount of sense for both Peugeot and GM. Peugeot has really improved their car quality over the years but basically remains a Europe only story. With the economy in Europe hurting now, they are really suffering. Likewise GMs European branches have been having a rough decade+. Opel/Vauxhal also are largely a European only story.
Hopefully between the two of them they can find enough ways to share basic components / research to create enough economy of scale.

:iagree:

Peugeot really needed to do something quickly. I think this is an ominous move re Opel, however. I was dumbfounded when GM talked about getting rid of them because Opel was so tightly involved with the newer designs but as time goes on....

I'm very serious about keeping politics and//or ideology OFF of this forum. Whether one agrees or disagrees with that policy is a moot point - it IS my policy; always has been and always will be. One post deleted and thread will be removed if any others are tempted to make political comments here. Nuff said.

A news story from today announcing a new strategic alliance between two old car companies...

This makes perfect sense to me.

For example, Ford and GM shared engineering costs for the 6F (6 speed automatic) trans about 10 years ago. Both companies are still using results of this effort with good success. Free market companies cooperate and share technology all the time.

Peugeot has some great powertrains (see the new MINI).
They also have some good technology on small diesels.
Peugeot could probably benefit as a vendor to GM for some of their technology. Win-win to me.

I will just say that I once owned Peugeot Fuego and without hesitation I can say that it was the worst car I have ever owned. One problem after the other and the seats almost ruined my back. I would hope that my experience was not indicative of all Peugeot cars, probably isn't, but it sure turned me off.

I'll assume you mean a Renault Fuego.
Worldwide known as the Renault 18.
My first new car.

I found mine (a 1.4 pushrod) to be pleasing and very reliable, but with abysmal dealer support.

I owned a very comfortable Peugeot 404, then traded it for a 504 diesel wagon which, though also comfortable, was the most gutless auto I have ever driven. I sold it as soon as I could. [Which took awhile as it was the 80's and diesels were not yet in vogue.] Good luck to both companies. Speaking of Renault, bring back the Alpine!

Well crap - brain frt - I had a Renault Fuego, not a Peugeot!

Speaking of Peugeot and GM, looks like Moody's isn't real impressed - they just lowered Peugeot's rating to Junk status. Time will tell.

These senior moments can be embarrassing!

My 12-speed bicycle was the Peugeot in the family!

Roger,

I was referring to the shared platforms -
SAAB lost a lot of it's identity through that.

Dead right Doug. Selling that Opel / Vauxhall Vectra, probably the worst car being made in Europe at that time, as a Saab must have got the founders really spinning.
Still, GM have learned a lot recently, it would seem.

And I thank you for it! :thankyousign:

The fact that the Boss keeps politics of the forum in itself is politics.
Kind of a double standard?
