A while back, my old pal Dave (from high school) sent me pictures he found in his attic.
He called them "Gems", which is a pretty good term.
I just got around to posting them.

All were taken in '67 in Jackson Township, NJ..

My $20, Austin A-40 "woodscar", doing "yumps" in the NJ Pine Barrens

My pal Sam's MGA Coupe'. I think those are Ford hubcaps. Eventually, he painted it an awful shade of green. He still owns it (in North Carolina) but he tells me it's in sad shape (and he'll never sell it).

Our little garage band playing at a high school dance (Gee. Where are all the groupies?). Dave (our drummer) took the picture. We had four guys in the band and between us, we owned two MGAs, a Simca, a 3.8 Jag sedan, a Dauphine and a flathead Anglia.

My MGA just before I sold it for $60 (running, but barely).
I drove the TR-3 to college for while but then replaced it with ~THIS SPRITE~. .

Once, while driving in the woods with Bob (our bassplayer) in his Simca, a tie rod snapped and the car rolled over. It crashed into a tree while it was skidding on its roof. I got hit in the head with a car rim that was in the back seat. Memorable.

My A-40 burned oil like it was going out of style. One day, it was about 2.5 quarts low and we couldn't find any oil....eventually, we found an old quart can of oil-based paint. Hey, it's got *oil* in the name! Close enough! It ran for about another six months after that, but eventually snapped a rod. I still have that rod on my desk as a paperweight.

Soon after all this, Sam and I went off to college, Bob went to work in the Texas oilfields (where he still is today) and Dave got a free trip to southeast Asia via Uncle Sam.
But we all survived somehow. Good memories!

Good memories, my friend!

A most wonderful revelation! Thanks fer th' glimpse Nial.

Those are great old photos! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif I like the one with the Austin A40 almost going airborne the most...

Sam's MGA coupe is sporting some '60/'61 Valiant dimpled-dog-dish hubcaps. I love the pictures.

Have a Meryy Christmas
Steve

Great pictures, even better stories--thanks for sharing them. You might want to consider turning them into a series of postcards.

I really like the story about using oil-based paint as an engine lubricant. I suppose people have painted their fence posts with used motor oil instead of creosote, so there's the yin yang of that.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Best regards,

Seeing you tool around the Pine Barrens brought back so many good memories for me. I used to rally an old (69) Fiat 124 coupe through the "pineys". Whatr great fun... Awesome pictures!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Genuine Gems.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Hearing your stories reminds me of how amazing it is that I survived some of the things my friends and I did back when.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
