Hi everyone
I am rebuilding the gearbox on my BN4. There is quite a lot of oil inside the bell housing and there doesn't appear to be a seal on the first motion shaft. Is this correct? There also isn't an Archimedes screw on the shaft, unless it's worn off. The shaft is smooth. Is this normal and if so, is there an aftermarket seal that could be fitted?

Yep, normal for the early ones. Get hold of a seal that fits the shaft (1" IIRC?) then take your bellhousing to a machinist and have him bore down into the back to fit the seal. Works a treat. Be sure to polish the area where the seal will run on the shaft with 240 grit sandpaper. Andy.
 
Hi Andy,

I know that you recently rebuilt your trans and waswondering what you used to seal the threads of the bolts that passed throughthe case (a source of oil seepage on a Healey transmission … especially ifusing a synthetic such as Red Line MTL). Would you suggest Matthew consider doing this as well?

Hi Ray,

I use Loctite 577 for threads. For the studs that come through into the bellhousing I also used annealed copper washers.

I'd recommend repainting the Glyptal on the inside of the case to seal any porosity if using Redline oil- that stuff can escape from anything.
