Gearbox Problem

I have an MGB MK11 without O/D. Lately when the gearbox has warmed up it can become difficult to select any gear from neutral, or when changing I can reach neutral and have difficulty going to the next gear. The gears don't actually crunch. Does anybody please have any advice? Vivian

Could be one of the shifting forks inside the tranny has come loose on the shaft. Could also be the synchro ring is worn. The forks can be checked by pulling the side plate on the left of the tranny. To replace the syncro ring the tranny has to be torn down. Not saying that either one is your problem, just a possibility.

First possibility is the clutch hydraulic system. Easiest way to check it would be to pump the clutch two or three times between shifts and see if it makes a difference in the way the thing goes into gear. If it goes in easier, the hydraulic system is starting to fail. A MUCH more desirable problem than the innards of the tranny going bad: the engine and gearbox would need to come out as a unit for the rebuild of the trans.

Now why didn't I think of that?

Let us know the result, too, Vivian.

And sometimes pumping the pedal doesn't help because there is too much air in the system. How easily does it shift into all the gears when the car is tured off??
