TR2/3/3A Gearbox number?

Looking at the gearbox that came with my TR3A I notice that it does not have a number stamped into it. There is a number cast into the passenger side.

On the drivers side it has this cast into it.

A replacement gearbox from Triumph perhaps? It did have an incorrect gear lever for the TR3A . It was bent not straight.

That's a 4 synchro box, from a later Triumph. From the size of the reinforcing rib (which isn't much to go on), I'm guessing TR6; but I can't explain the hole near the clutch lever.

There might be a number stamped near the clutch lever, but maybe not.

Is this a TR6 gear lever? This is the lever that came with it the gear box.

I see that the stamped number is in a different location on the TR6. I will get out there and check on the left hand side of the bell housing.

Could be, but I'm not sure. There were several variations, for example the TR4 lever is also bent like that. IIRC, the TR4 lever had the hole through the middle of the ball while TR6 (and Stag) did not, but I can't tell if yours has the hole or not.
 
It has a slot through the middle and a hole in the end for the anti rattle spring. The thread for the knob is much smaller diameter than the TR3A gear lever.

Have not found the number yet.

I looked it up; TR4-4A had the slot, TR250-TR6 did not.

Of course, the levers interchange more or less, so that doesn't prove what the gearbox is. My TR3 has a TR6 gearbox housing, with TR4 gears inside, TR4 OD, and a TR3 shift lever. Even has a dipstick !
 
I got under the car and still do not see any stamped numbers. It may be on the face that bolts up to the motor but I do not remember seeing it there.

Did they stamp a serial number on a dealer replacement gear box?

AFAIK, they were all supposed to have numbers. But I've found several without the numbers, so maybe you're right.

TR6 didn't have the retaining bolt for the clutch shaft, so I was probably wrong about it being a TR6 box.
