TR2/3/3A Gearbox noise....

When the clutch pedal is up and there is a noise coming from the gearbox is it possible that it could be something other than the release bearing rubbing against the pressure plate levers that is noisy...ie. something inside the box itself? I've tried adjusting the clutch slave rod every which way with no luck.

Probably not. If it goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed, it's probably the gear box input shaft bearing.

The noise does go away when the pedal is depressed. The input shaft bearing is bathed in oil so not sure why it would fail. It's hard to describe mechanical noises but normally when a bearing goes you hear a "whining" noise. I'm hearing a kind of a " low level rattling noise"? How can I be sure it's the input shaft bearing and not the release bearing? Is it likely that this input shaft bearing could actually fail complteatly as I would like to drive the car for the summer before I tear down the gearbox?

The thowout bearing does not come into play until you depress the clutch pedal. That being said, the input shaft doesn't stop spinning until the pedal is completely depressed. What happens if you move the pedal by hand just past the free play area without fully depressing the pedal. That would put a slight load on the bearing but not be enough to stop the input shaft from spinning. Also, "bathed in oil" does not mean "can never fail"

Karls59tr seems to be describing the classic symptom of a bad TO bearing. Tom

bnw I'll try your suggestion and see what happens.

I had a look at the throw out bearing when I pulled the gearbox and it seemed to spin freely and wasn't sticking however the the bearing wasn't mounted flush with the carrier flange and I thought that was what was causing the noise. I carefully pressed the bearing to it's correct location on the carrier. The carrier was somewhat scored where the bearing had been previously riding? In hindsight I probably should have replaced both.:confusion:

Hi,

I had the flywheel bolts loosen up. At idle, it sounded like a bunch of shoes in the cloths drier. It stopped when I stepped on the clutch. Might want to get a long screw driver and see where the sound is coming from. You could go under the car and slowly spin the engine over with a breaker bar, and see if the flywheel has any run out.

Good luck,
Roy
