GearBox Lubrication

What kind of Lube is best for my TR6 Tranny?

I've been told to stay away from something called "gl5". Something to do with the stuff not being kind to brass parts when it gets hot.

Supposedly "gl4" is ok.

The mechanic that has done a lot of work to my car swears by using Castrol 20-W50 motor oil in the tranny. Ofcourse that stuff is "gl5",...I guess?.... So now I gotta wonder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I don't even know what all this "gl" stuff is all about. Apparently it's some sort of rating.

I'm sure there are lots of high tech lubricants out there these days. So what's the Best?

My Tranny has just been rebuilt,...I sure don't want to ruin it by running the wrong lube in it.

Thanks in Advance

Stinky,
Usually the mechanic that rebuilds your tranny will recommend a particular lubricant. When I had my 4-speed done by TRF, they recommended Hypoy GL4, the 5 will supposedly ruin the brass in the transmission. Now that I had the J-type overdrive added on, the mechanic (Quantum)insisted that I use only 30 wt. non-detergent oil. Otherwise, he would void the 12 month warrantee. I certainly am not going to argue with him. There are other choices of lubes. It made it easy for me for the builder to insist, no-brainer...

So would the Castrol 20-W50 that my mechanic is recommending be classified as a "GL-4", or "GL-5".

Or since it's actually Motor Oil does the "GL" stuff even apply?

This mechanic swears by the 20-W50, he says the tranny's that run 20-W50 always look a lot better inside when compared to the tranny's that that he's rebuilt that were running Gear oil of any sort.

Not that I don't trust the guy,...I just want to be sure of what I'm doing to my car.

The latter; the "GL" spec doesn't apply to motor oils.

Many other British gearboxes ran (just fine, btw) on motor oil, including the early TR gearboxes!

Thanks Andy,
That makes me feel better.

I was ok with the 20-W50 in the gearbox,...until I heard people starting talking about how some oils would harm the Brass/Bronze parts. That had me a little concerned.

I think I'm good to go /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
