after a little examination it appears my 1st gear isnt engaging correctly and slips out easily when it does work..
2nd holds pretty good and 3rd and 4th seem good...reverse works but slips also,but not as bad as 1st....
i dont know much about trannys ""yet".....i see a little bit of shavings in there but no chunks or anything alarming.
it seems to me like first gear needs adjusted or something...i dont wanna tear it down if i dont need to as it seems far from worn out, but i dont know...ideas, suggestions?

Can't really "see" much from the photo, but from description it sounds like you have a *perfect* opportunity to learn about this box right NOW. If it's hopping out of gear it needs attention, and you already know what a task it is getting TO it... why put it back in and have to yank it again in six months or less? Other argument is: The condition will only deteriorate further, causing more wear, more $$ later. If all gears are indeed still servicable, you only need baulk rings, bearings and seals. Possibly a layshaft. Photocopy the relevant tranny section of the manual (keep the "book" clean), find a workspace big enough to spread it out (CLEAN is important, too), take photos for reference, dive in and fix it.

it appears all my gears are unchipped etc. so i have a good starting point i think....
ok, so what do i need to buy to rebuild this tranny?
anyone gotta rebuild list? only 86000 miles on it! ; )
 
VB has a rebuild kit they sell. It contains the appropriate needle bearings, synchro rings, seals, roller bearings, and a counter shaft. I don't think it has any shims in it but it might be good to get a couple of various sizes in case you have to shim on reassembly.

Oh, I might add, the transmission is a challenging little number but it can be mastered with the official workshop manual and a bit of patience. Without either of those you might end up with a transmission that is worse than you started.
