Gearbox Clutch Release Fork

I'm tearing the gearbox apart on my TR3 to replace bearings and sychros. The box was OK before I started the resto, except for a weak 2nd gear synchro and some bearing noise. I got the box totally disassembled, except for the clutch shift fork and shaft. The retaining bolt was of course sheared, and I guess enough of it is sticking out of the hole to not allow the fork to slide off the shaft.

Any way to get this sucker off short of cutting the fork or the shaft?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There is a fairly straight-forward proceedure that involves drilling the fork from the 'top' side. Following is an excerpt from a tech article I found a while back:

"It is very easy to remove the tapered part of the pin that is stuck in the operating shaft. First, one drills a 1/8 to 3/16 inch hole in the clutch fork directly across from the hole where the pin is inserted. Next, the fork is aligned on the shaft in the same position as if an unbroken pin were in place. Finally, the broken part of the pin is driven out with a pin punch inserted in the drilled hole.

To minimize possible future problems removing broken pins, before I install a fork, I always drill a 3/16-inch hole in the end of the pinholes of forks that don’t already have a hole."

The original article has more verbiage on the how's and why's as well as some decent photos of the fork and shaft being worked on. If you want the whole thing, I will have to email it to you off-forum.

Yellowdog, yes, I would be interested in the whole article.
My e-mail address is in my profile.
