I have been let down on a gentle trip out on tuesday. gearbox went bang at 50mph in od 4th
was left with drive only in 4th
i can’t do gearboxes so with the fantastic support of Pete cox and son
I took the gearbox ( it’s an early tr6 box with A type OD)out on Wednesday after work
drove it to Redditch ( 2 hrs away)thurs night after work where Tom opened up specially at 7pm to receive it off me and today he had a look.
i know you are as intrigued as me ( well May be not !?) as to what was found.
Tom at https://petecoxsportscars.co.uk
has been true to his word and opened the box and started to strip it and sent me some annotated pics
this is the first
look closely and you may just see - with a trained eye and experience - the minor defect.
Answers on a post card as they used to say. !!!

As the Wicked Witch in "The Wizard of Oz" says, "These things must be handled delicately!"

I never realized that applied to gearboxes...

Ask any retrogrouch over here and they would tell to round up and match all the teeth, then grab yourself some J-B Weld to stick everything together. You'll be back on the track in no time*. Best of all, it looks like you can get it in the UK:

*Of course your mileage may vary, all claims from my text are tongue in cheek except for the "it looks like you can get it in the UK"

thanks madflyer. A comparison is always useful!!

Ha ha J B weld that’s funny the miracle metal

peter cox and son sports cars https://petecoxsportscars.co.uk/

Is one I was put on to several years ago
Pete Cox is the cox as in cox and buckles that became Moss
There isn’t anything that Pete doesn’t know and his son ( mid 20,s I’d guess is being taught it all. )
Pete is a racer too so is being brilliant in trying to help me out quickly. He still has his all aluminium TR4 race car it’s rivet city in there.

Interesting that it happened in 4th, as 4th does not load any of the gear teeth. It's just a straight through coupling to the mainshaft. I suspect a tooth was lost earlier, and it was just waiting to get caught in the other gears. Did you notice a regular clicking noise before the bang?

Those Indian workshops on YouTube that repair the trucks could cast a new gear out of aluminum and have you back on the road in a couple of hours!

Well the gearbox specialist have worked wonders and after a 1.5hr trip there and a 2.5hr trip back I have a refurbished and somewhat uprated gearbox to wrestle into the car tomorrow. Many of you know taking it out is the easy bit.
refitting takes a lot of precision lining up for it all to slide together nicely
Tomorrow will tell

Hi @poolboy not quite that good/different.
I think is mainly a new thicker 2nd gear thrust washer with 2nd gear n machined to make room for it.
I also think they increased the pressure on the o/d. There was talk of 600lb ( I think 450 is about standard ?) so it changes quicker as I use the od change with throttle flat to the floor.
At the beginning of the year I decided to have a new engine built so I may yet need to change the drive train diff ratios may be even a non od box. I will need to see.

Mate came round this morning to help refit the box. We were planning for a battle and bad words but 10 mins and it was fitted and bolts fitted great result and the best refit to date (and I’ve done it a few times)
A few long stud at the top helps a lot and a mate fo that extra help. As it’s a heavy lump with the od !

all ancillaries fitted and interior in at my leisure the rest of the day.
run up on axles stands and all seems to work well.
