gear reduction starter fix ring gear bevel?

Can anyone confirm that a gear reduction starter on a TR6 is tolerant of the bevel of the ring gear facing the rear of the car?

That is, the bevel on the ring gear is facing rearward and the current solenoid starter engages from the front. Everything worked fine until I rebuilt the engine, and upon assembly, the starter pinion doesn't engage every third time or so.

I was considering replacing the ring gear to get the bevel on the right side, but have heard rumor a modern gear reduction starter could work fine with the bevel going the wrong way. If anyone could confirm I'll order one up! Sounds like it's backward on virtually all TR6s.

Thanks!

it should work fine, and as you pointed out it worked before the rebuild.
I would take a look at the starter itself and see if the pinion gear is clean, if it slides properly etc. also check the solenoid which moves the pinion into gear. Unlike the inertial type, the pinion should not be spinning when it tries to engage so the bevel is much less critical.

Please be a bit more specific... in that the starter drive gear fails to engage.... does the starter just "click"... or do the teeth grind? If it is just a click.. the starter has begun to fail. It IS a Toyota starter and, owning and working on Toyotas, I can tell you that is a classic early warning symptom. If it is clicking, confirm the condition of the battery, cables, and ground integrity from the engine to battery to frame to sheet metal. If all else is OK, replace the starter.... the bevels have never been an issue for any one making the conversion. :savewave:

Excellent, thanks for the info, guys. To clarify...

About every third start, it goes "click-WWWWWHHHhhhhhiiirrrrrr....-CLICK"

Like it's spinning, but not engaging. Does that make sense? It never did this before the rebuild. I did not intentionally adjust the throw of the pinion on the starter--just cleaned things up.

That make sense? Any chance there's a specific pinion/ring gear relationship I threw off by taking things apart?

Makes plenty of sense to me. Mine did that because of wear. The wear happened because the pinion throw had decreased. That's as far as I got with the diagnosis.
Your's could be wear, or mis-alignment.
The cure was to pull the tranny, change the ring gear, etc. etc.
Or convert to an inertia type starter, like the TR-250.
I took the easy route 2 years ago. So far so good.

For future searches, had the ring gear replaced (for $88 labor) and added a gear reduction starter. Problem gone, and the motor starts a lot faster now with the faster gear reduction motor speed! Thanks for all the input!
