Hi,
My 1972 MGB gear box whines when in neutral and engine idling, the noise goes away if I press the clutch in or roll the car back or forwards about 1 foot. clean castrol GTX 20w50 in it & up to the high mark.
What could it be?
Thank you,
Barry
I have the same type of annoying whine and am living with it until I have to pull the engine and or transmission for other work. One thing you can do is check to see if it is a throw out bearing problem. Car idling, transmission in neutral, reach in and push the clutch in until it just begins to make "contact". you should be able to feel/hear a substantial change if it is the throw out bearing. When I did this = no change. Others that i respect on the boards told me this more or less eliminated the TO bearing from consideration. Perhaps the real experts can correct or modify my advice.
If it is a bearing failure can possibly damage other items. Wait for people who have more experience than I to chime in for a a more definitive answer.
My guess is with the rest. Input shaft bearing is worn. Mine has a slight bearing noise when idling, but not annoying yet. I wouldn't let it worry you. Naturally, if you have to pull the engine for any reason, I'd put a new one in.JMHO. PJ
