I am getting a bit of drip from the drain plug at the bottom of the gear box (the smaller one). At least I think that is where it is coming from. I have it very tight trying to stop the leak. Is there anything I should have put on the plug before I installed it? Do I need to replace the plug? (I hate loosing RedLine, $$$)

Has anyone ever tried good old teflon pipe tape? - Catch the Redline and pump it back in!
Also , don't discount the fact that sometimes it could be leaking somewhere else and running to the low point - in this case the plug - That sort of thing's hard to determine from underneath an automobile.

That's a tapered plug. Don't overtighten it trying to stop a leak, or you risk cracking the case. Clean the area well, and check that it's not running from somewhere else, as mentioned. I've used Dr. Scholls spray foot powder as a leak detector. It dries to a white film, and will show a leak, or the track of a leak as a dark spot.

I agree with Bugeye that is a 3/4 tapered pipe plug and if you tightten it to tight you will crack the case. Either teflon pipe tape (50 cents a roll at Lowes) or some brush on pipe dope either will work. Tightening more won`t stop the leak it is working through the threads and leaking out. I know mine did and brush on pipe dope stopped it cold. Skip
 
I'm starting to sound like a broken record /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif but I prefer Hylomar for threads/gaskets that contact oil.

John, I have an excellent source of supply for Hylomar. I can get it in cans, and even in spray cans! Haven't tried the spray yet.
I've used the stuff forever, and in my opinion, it's the finest gasket dressing/sealant on the planet. I even use it around the oil and water passages on a head gasket.
Howwever, I have been told by some people that they find it hard to get locally, which I don't understand, as it is in the NAPA catalog.
