In checking the oil in the gear box I noticed it was a little low, just below the line a little. This got me thinking about when to check the oil, hot or cold. Also isn't the 3/4 gear rod high in the system and perhaps getting less lubrication if is oil low, in a climbing position?
How far down is safe? Dose over filling just leak out? Just curious becouse of the noise I get when climbing in third gear. I believe this is a needle bearing problem I hope to deal with in winter.

Hi TH,IMOP having the box a wee bit low is better than overfilling it.Yes if persistently overfilled it will tend to leak out the front Input/Pilot shaft seal. The measurement should not produce significant error whether the box is hot or cold if the level is close to the fullmark.About the shifter rails, there is so much thrashing going on inside the box that everything gets well lubricated.-Fwiw---Keoke
