Curious about slop in the driveline, I jacked up one rear wheel. I put the TR3 in reverse, and measured the amount of play at the wheel. I have 9 degrees of movement.
Has anyone else tried this. I would love to know how much play is in a freshly rebuilt tranny, Overdrive and rear end.
 
Quite honestly I wouldn't worry about it unless there are obvious signs of a problem. These are old cars...a little slop is normal with all of the abuse these things have taken over the years.
 
IMO, 9 degrees at the wheel is meaningless. The gears all along the drivetrain each have to have some backlash in order to run freely.

My late TR3A had more like 90 degrees at the wheel; with no apparent ill effects.
