Gauge retainer "screws"

Where might we find the gauge retainer "screws", or the round end-piece that hold the gauge retainer to the dash? Two of my gauges are missing these retainers.

It's the circular endpiece that screws onto the post-thingy.

I hope that makes sense.

Anyone?

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

one of mine "disappeared" behind the dash as I was trying to get it on and I found a wing nut in my bolt pin that fit

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

Thats a tough nut to crack, the thread is a fine thread and avery small nut. I saw a gauge on ebay go for cheap so I grabbed it mainly for the nuts.

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

Mark, are you talking about the thumb nuts?

I've had arguments/discussions about the size of those with some of the people on the Triumph forum. The one place we all agreed was that there are at least three different sizes that were used over the years.

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

Are these small round nuts that are knurled to get a good grip? If so they are easy to make and in any thread size. Brass aluminum or steel.

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

I found "wing nuts" at the home depot that fit my guages ('79) Too bad I lost them, and the retainer thing itself before I put them in.

Anybody know where to get the retainers bar thingys?

Exactly, Doug. The thumb nuts that screw on the gauge posts and hold the gauge in place.

ALSO, while I'm here, do any of you know if the two smaller gauges (fuel/oil/temp) on a MKIII Midget have two thumb nuts or just one? I tried without success to locate the thumb nuts on the back two small gauges, will devote more effort to it next time. There ain't much room behind that dash . . . :nonod:

Thanks for all the replies, gents!

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

Mark,

There are two the little posts are held against the back of the dash and a spreader goes over top the back side of the gauge. The ground was also originally attached to one of these posts so you need two nuts for one post.

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

On my MKIV, there is one nut behind the smaller gauges. And all the nuts are 10-32 thread. I know because I have a mix of the nuts that came with the car, and nuts from my work bench for all the MIA original nuts.

make them - a little hobby shop flat stock - two drilled holes and two bends

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

I've run across two different threads on the gauge retaining thumb nuts, 10-32 and also 2mm. If you have a remaing nut take it to your local hardware store and check it against the machine screws to find out which it is and then check for thumb nuts. Most TruValue and Ace stores have these in the yellow plastic bins near the fastener section. Had to replace 4 for a friends TR6 that he lost.

Re: Gauge retainer "screws"

Never throw away old guages they have, Nuts, bolts. retainers, glass, rings, pointers that are of use even if nothing else is.
