Gauge lights

Last night, I pulled the old socket out of my temp/pressure gauge (I reused the light from the old temp gauge), and discovered the bulb is a SCREW-IN bulb. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif where the heck does one find replacements for those?!? I thought all the bulbs in our cars were bayonet style.

The last time I swapped a bulb back there I could have sworn it was a bayonet style bulb. I'm hoping this is just a freak anomaly. Thankfully, the new gauge came with a new bayonet socket. So I should be able to change the socket relatively easily, if necessary.

It just occurred to me that it's possible the screw in bulb may have been a DPO installment. I'll give the socket a closer look now that I have plenty of light.

Not all bulbs were bayonet. I don't know which were which on later cars though. You can get the bulbs at any good auto parts store. If you can't find them, there's a really good auto parts supply in Canoga Park that stocks parts for MGs and other British.

bleh, it's a screw in socket. So is the socket from the old oil pressure gauge. hmmmmmmmm...

I assume VB and TRF still sell these. Over the years I ordered several more than I thought I'd ever use... because the local parts stores didn't carry that particular size.

The dash gauges used factory 2.2 watt bulbs, which are not bright enough to see the gauges at night. They were Lucas miniature screw in bulbs. I have a supply of replacement bulbs which are 8 watts and solve the problem of dim gauges. If interested, contact me at dmagee@ij.net

I don't necessarily have a problem with the brightness/dimness of my gauge lights, though brighter would be nicer. The problem I'm primarily concerned with in this thread is cosmetic. The lighting in the dual gauge I installed is not tinted green like the lighting in the rest of my gauges.
