gasser project!

What a sweet little car, I wish that I could afford it! The engine wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, but they are charming and fun to pootle around in. I hope that it goes to a good home.

Is that a flathead engine? reminds me of the flathead in the old Willys Jepp I used to have.

Cute little car....don't let Keenan see it - its close to him....hehehehe

I could see that as an altered wheel base- wheel stander car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Hello all,

yse it is a side valve engine, 1172cc capacity and a three speed gearbox with synchromesh on second and top only. To pass a UK driving test in one of these cars you had to demonstrate that you could change into bottom gear on the move, ie. do a double de-clutch.
The other unusual and terrible feature was vacuum driven wipers which went fast on the over-run but almost stopped when you accelerated.

Way back in the day, my Mother had one of these,
we were living in New Zealand at the time, I remember
the sound of the Prefect running along the highway(?)
from Rangiora to Kiapoi or Christchurch to visit
relatives. There is little wonder why I like SBCs,
**** near brings a tear to my eyes, simpler days,
indeed...

About 20 years ago, my then-future-ex-brother-in-law had a 1952 (or so) Ford Prefect. I remember it being almost as much fun to drive as my '52 Triumph Mayflower, also a flathead w/three-speed gearbox. Certainly by today's standards, specifications for both cars were very antiquated, but at least the Mayflower had a water pump, hydraulic brakes and electric wipers!

[/ QUOTE ]Again, regarding that '51 Prefect, I remember that that particular car had a vacuum reserve tank, which helped out a bit in keeping wipers going. I've no idea if that was an original feature or not, but I remember being intrigued by the fact that the tank was the very same tank found in the vacuum-operated headlamp door system on the old family '68 Ford LTD Country Squire!
