TR2/3/3A Gas tanks...two different types?

Seems to me I tried to install a tr3 tank years ago but the drain plug and and outlet fittings were in the wrong spot. What year did they change the location of these or was the tank modified?
 
The size of the tank also changed at post 60k. It got a little smaller.
 
There are at least 4 different tanks:

The smaller TR2,the TR3A, and then the period between them (TR3) had 2 styles that have the same capacity, but different shapes and hold down straps.
 
Macy's Garage website has a good photo showing three of the four variations:

The early cars have a tank with the outlet in the center of the bottom and the drain on the passenger side (right). I think the later cars have the outlet on the drivers side bottom (left) and the drain in the center. Look at the floor of your car and see where the holes have been pre-drilled.
