Gas tank replacment

Well its come time that the gas tank needs replacing in the good ol 65 BJ8.

Anyone have an opinion on a steal vs. aluminum gas tanks? What you’ve experienced or seen. Pros and cons on both?

Also, where can I get a good quality, good fit, original looking steel gas tank, or an aluminum tank?

I’ve see some awful looking ones out there.

This is a name of someone who advertised tanks on ebay for about $199: Jorge Cervera, 1172 3rd Ave #D3, Chula Vista, CA 91911, phone 562-867 0576. I don't anything about him or his tanks, which he manufactures, but I copied his name down for reference. I believe they are aluminum tanks. If this turns out to be a good deal, please report it back to us. I only kept his name because I will be needing a tank in the near future.

I have one of Jorge`s tanks. It is a steel replacement and is a pretty well made tank. Mine fit exactly and works well. The only difference was that the outlet fitting was a little higher and I had to open up the hole on the rear bulkhead a little (1/4 inch)to clear the fuel line. The outlet fitting is a male fitting with straight pipe threads. Skip

Two years ago I bought a Moss steel tank. I was going to get aluminum but they were out of stock. Two years later I had trouble with the fuel filters plugging & found that the tank was shedding very tiny rust particles that plugged the filters. The particles were small enough to pass right through the screen in the SU pump.

I inspected the inside of the tank & it is coated with light powdery rust. Never buy a steel tank that is not galvanized inside. I just assumed that the Moss tank was properly made when I bought it. Not the case. This tank has always been kept full & stored with fuel stabilizer in the fuel. I live in a dry climate & the garage never goes below 45 degrees. I may switch to the originally intended aluminum tank, but they are not exactly cheap. I'm reluctant to experiment with the various tank "sealers" least I create a worse problem.

Go for the aluminum tanks or don't use good filters.

Shorn, if you will be needing a tank in the near future you had better order it now. Jorge's off sale price for his tank is $400.00 + S & h.Also get a sealing kit to avoid the rusting problem Dave mentioned in this thread. Sealing steel tanks is of primary interest now that Gasahol is being used-FWIW---Keoke

Dave, Gas Tankrenu will etch repair and seal a tank for very little cost I had mine sealed almost 15 years ago and it is still intact. No rust or failure of the sealed inner surfaces.-FWIW---Keoke

I put in a custom aluminium tank in the early 80's. It cost $75. Look for some boating supply houses near you. Mine may have started life as a custom fish tank for a commercial fisherman. Mine has no lower sump area and the fuel sender area is a sunken rectangle so I have lost about a gallon of capacity, maybe two. This is certainly the permanent end to rust flakes. I would never go back to steel, especially at the price.
