Gas tank paint question

I seem to recall that you are supposed to leave part of the tank unpainted around the the sender presumably for a ground - am I correct in this recollection?

Yes and also by some of the mounting to body bolt holes. So it gets the ground from the body.

Why not just run a ground wire from one of the sender mounting screws to a grounded bolt/screw on the body?

All these questions are GREAT!! My gas tank is painted black except for a ring around the sending unit...think I'll get rid of some of the paint around/in the body mounting holes.

Thanks!!
