I believe there are a number of external sealants you could use as a temporary patch. One word of caution, don't use any silicone (RTV) products. They aren't suitable for exposure to gasoline.
If the spot is easily accessible, I'd consider draining the tank, cleaning off the surrounding paint near the leak, and using a heavy-duty plumber's soldering iron (and acid flux) to tin the area with lead and cover it with a brass shim-stock patch.
