Gas Tank Leak

My car leaks a little, but only when the gas tank is completely full. I've not dropped the tank yet, but I'm hoping its leaking around the sending unit. Is there anything else on top? There's no gas leaking in the car, so I'm assuming its not leaking around the filler tube.

Thanks,

David

Vent line (on later model cars). What year is your car?

Mine on my '61 was rusted out right where the filler pipe went into the tank under the boot floorboards. If that's the case, either get someone to patch it (not too easy IMHO). or buy a new one.(not that expensive) I bought a new one.

Hey David and Rkep01
My BE tank also rusted through where it went through the floor sealing ring. That "sealing ring", on my car was a ring of sponge material. I bet over the years it kept that joint wet for weeks.

I found this out when I dropped the tank to put in a new gauge sender. Some idiot had "sealed" the rusted through joint with Silly Putty, which held even more water. The damned thing practically fell off when the tank came down. It was flopping around like crazy. If I ever had filled up the tank it would have been leaking all over.

I had a local guy at a radiator shop (who happens to be very good) braze the thing back together for about $100, just so I could get in a few more rides last summer. I really should have bought a new tank--it is on my list for the future.

Good luck
Charlie

ps: Memo to daveu, freshman member, I would like to see you become a senior member. Take care of your leaking gas tank before you do anything else. It is dangerous!!!!!!!

Floor sealing ring is a gasket which goes between the outside of the rear floor and the tank. Seals the inside floor area from road debris, water, etc. Moss @282-930.
