gas tank and grill installation

yes i am being very anal about such an unseen area of the trunk of all places.. paid 17 dollars for the gasket. i have used similar tapes on much more seen areas. wish now that i had used something similar!!!

The opening shown by healeyblue is correct. On my BN4, the replacement tank fitting was higher than the original fitting and the PO cut a new opening to match. I read here the BN4 tanks were different than later tanks and only the later tanks are available. I wonder if that applies to BN6s also.

the opening seems to be in the same alignment with the tank straps as show in healeyblue picture.that was why i was wondering about there being a recess for the gasket. i have new straps ordered from moss...on backorder so i cant strap the tank inand compress the gasket. i would rather make a much thinner gasket than cut another hole for the tank fitting.... my trunk floor without a cutout looked very factory in appearance. oh well ...maybe the floor was without cutout and therefore no large thick gasket that raises the tanks....and there is a maybe one inch hole in the floor back aways maybe for a tank plug located in a different spot????

The pics I uploaded show you where the tank sits once it's in in relation to the tank strap brackets etc . I didn't use the gasket from any of the suppliers . I sat the tank in place measured the gap and then just used closed cell foam tape a bit bigger then the measured gap so it had some "squish factor" .

My '63 BJ7 looks exactly like the pic that healeyblue posted. As he said the sides and rear of the hole follow the frame. The front of the hole is 1" out from the boot wall providing a lip for the tank to sit on. The hole measures 16 15/16" X 6 13/15".

Let me know if you need more.

The opening is level. The gasket sits on the floor of the opening and the tank compresses the gasket once strapped in. The gasket opening is the size you should go with and it also should match up with the frame rails and rear support.

thanks for all the input from each of you. i will go with the stated opening size and squeeze the daylights out of the gasket when i get a set of straps. in the meantime i think that i will clean the surfaces of the trunk and repaint. again, thank you for your help and going to the trouble of measuring and posting pics!!! just as a note, the trunk floor appeared to be factory and i saw no evidence of being replaced or the tank opening being welded shut???

i have the opening cut....now....the gasket for the tank to opening is tapered....front to rear! does anyone know what is the correct position...thick end at the trunk wall or thin at the trunk wall...i called moss but they could not answer!!!....using the search function i was able to locate several questions such as i had. according to the moss supplied pdf for the installation of a new tank, the thick end of the gasket goes to the bulkhead!!!

I usually put a few extra squares of closed cell foam between the tank and the trunk floor to avoid direct contact to the tank. This serves to allow air to circulate if any water ever gets in, as well as a means of leveling the tank.

thanks for all the help and especially the pictures. i could not install the tank low enough for the fuel fitting on top of the tank to match up to the opening in the rear bulkhead. the moss gasket was just to firm. even though my car is not original...v8 conversion...i was not going to open the hole. to a larger diameter. so i just made a new gasket out of some rubber material i had on hand.
