October, 1964, St. Petersburg Florida. Price had dropped from 24.9 to 21.9 over night!

Note the big ol' American cars patiently waiting for a cheap fill-up.

But the Simca (?) just drives right on by.

Thank you, TheOldMotor!

You know, I can't remember when Ethyl was ever that cheap.
Now she costs you dinner and a movie

Jeesh! they were doin that dumb 9/10ths thing back that far huh?
Ever try buying 1 gallon, and go inside to get your 1/10th of a cent change?

I wish that would end ,in fact. Don't think it really matters any more

I think they DID end it in Australia a few years back. They may still advertise to pennies but it's rounded to the nearest nickle.

I truly remember filling up my '70 Vette with Gulf premium for 17.9 cents per gallon during a gas war in 1971.

"Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd sing and dance forever and a day.". (ok, who sang that song?)

Bill - how 'bout Mary Hopkins!

Tom (who remembers buying Sinclair regular for 13.9 cents/gal during a "war" in the early 1960s in Fort Worth. You could stand on the corner and watch the service stations dropping prices every hour or so.)

Great pic. Look at all the US land yachts with one person inside, queing up for cheap gas, and the FIAT cruising on by.
