Ever since I purchased the car (67 BGT) nearly two years ago, the gas guage has only read 1/4 full. It parks normaly when the car is shut off and swings up to 1/4 when you start, no matter how much fuel is in the tank. Is this likely to be a sender problem or...???
Sender pro'lly has a build-up of crud on the rheostat wire or a break in it. You ~may~ get away with removing the unit and with #600 wet-or-dry give the wire along the contact path of the arm a bit of cleaning.
It is enclosed in a clamped together metal box so access is like dental work: Firm but gentle.
I do believe I'd be fishing inside the tank with a magnet, hoping there is enough of the metal rod to get picked up.
You do NOT want rusty pieces of that rod going into the pickup tube.
You might get lucky and have the float still attached to the rod remnants.
