Gas cap gasket?

A quickie question-

I am re-installing Crypty's refurbished fuel tank.
I notice my car has no gasket protecting the car body
from the metal gas cap underside.

Should there be a gasket between the two surfaces to
protect the paint finish from scratches?

thanks,

d

There is a grommet that seals the cap and the body opening. What is that blue stuff?

Ray=that blue stuff is the blue/gray metal
the gas cap sleeve is made from. Oxidized
light blue for some reason.

Tom- thanks for the reference.

DPO Pedro sure did short change this poor old beast
of car.

Blue, never seen it before. My 6 and 250 gas caps are just plain old aluminum gray. At least we now know why the gas tank is painted blue.

Dale - how is the gasket where the tank meets the filler neck? I ask since when I pulled my tank I didn't replace that gasket - which was a dumb decision - and the tank leaks now when it is more than 3/4 full...

TD-

There is a rubber sleeve approximately
3" in length that both the tank filler
neck and the gas cap bottom tube slide
into.

Two clamping bands hold the rubber sleeve
tight .

Here is a 60 mil thickness TPO gasket I
made to go between the gas cap and car body.
It seems to fit pretty well. I could not see
much detail from the Moss diagram. So, my best
approximation.

Dale, looks pretty good. The original was a grommet. Attached are pictures of the original out of my '73.

Thanks Ray!

Why on earth would that moron DPO Pedro have
removed the grommet and not put it back?

Mine is not a grommet but it IS pretty snug tight
and will protect the car paint.

thanks for the photo.

Based on the way that you asked the question, I believe that you have answered it as well.

Dale,

What condition is the round rubber seal that goes between the cap ad the top of the neck? This is the one that seals the tank when you close the cap?
