Garage Up-date

Re: Garage Update

Hay Ray, is it too late to add some stairs into the overhead for storage? Could also put a dormer window on the back for light.

Well, Jack, I kicked around the idea of upstairs storage early on...even have a CAD drawing with a landing and stairs in place in one corner, and decided against it, took up too much space. I may deck in the loft and do the pull down stairs, just for occasional storage, we'll see. Fact is, the knees aren't any younger and I'd like to keep everything to one level.

As far as the dormer, nah...will just collect too much dust. That's one of the two reasons why I elected to NOT include any windows in the building. The other is to provide maximum usable wall space.

I went yesterday and picked up 15, 48" four tube flourescent fixtures; 32 watts per bulb. That's 128 watts per fixture for a total of 1920 watts. The best information I could find on the internet for wattage recommendations seemed to put high visibility requirements (offices, kitchens, workshops, etc.) at about 2 watts per square foot. With the 24'x24' shop having 576 total square feet that would equate to about 1200 watts. I used my usual rule of thumb and added half again as much capacity and was planning for a minimum of 1800 watts. I finally settled on five rows with three fixtures per row and thus the 1920 watts.

I'm going to have the electrician wire the lighting for two circuits. One circuit will light the row of fixtures on each of the angled ceiling sections and the center row of the flat ceiling (9 of the total 15 fixtures). The other circuit will light the remaining two rows on the flat ceiling (6 of the total 15 fixtures). That way I can use two switches to light 6, 9, or all 15 fixtures. That should cover my light needs especially with the painted (semi-gloss white) walls and floor.

Re: Garage Update

I didn't but might when I get the lift installed and try putting the car on it the first time.

The lift I'm buying has a minimum pad height of 3 1/2"...so it's going to be close. I think the car will clear by an inch or so.

In the past I've used some home made wood 2"x12"x24" ramps with a 45 degree angle on one end and stop block on the other. Was just enough to allow me to get a trolley jack underneath. Then I found a low profile aluminum jack and out went the ramps.

Thanks for the suggestion...only problem I see with them is the price...OUCH!

Re: Garage Update

They are lightweight. If you go to large swap meets you can often find vendors selling them for less.

Re: Garage Update

Ray,

All I can say is I've no doubt you are going to be a very happy man!

BTW, I did check our your web site. Looks great but what impressed me even more than the Current State pages is the parts you've been collecting!

Re: Garage Update

Not just "collecting", Tim...I've actually been pulling stuff out and finding a place for it on the car

It's nice to see the "collection" begin shrinking I must say that it is great to move to a new phase of the project and already have the parts sitting there. That does, however, require that I sit down and plan the project and consider how and when all the parts and pieces interface. It also means staying on budget and avoiding impulse changes and buying...a good thing for me.

Re: Garage Update

Two electric space heaters been going for the last hour out in the garage to warm things up a bit. Trevor we got the same snow as well here in Dayton, 12" and 35-40 mph winds and still snowing until late afternoon. Time to stay home and keep hunkered down. About to finally get back out for A-Post work. Goal is A Skin on and DS door hung back in place by tomorrow night.
