Garage Update

After alot of cold and rain we had enough of a break to get the driveway done. Only the lift install and U-Coat-It floor are left. Can't wait!

Re: Garage Update

Nice job! You know, that new driveway is going to have marked spots if you park any LBCs on it.

Re: Garage Update

Looks Great !

Re: Garage Update

You sir are an inspiration to men everywhere. Nicely done!

Re: Garage Update

Nice Garage, on a side note:
Is that clay suitable for making tennis courts?

Very nice indeed! Which bay is getting the chassis dyno?

Tim

Re: Garage Update

really really nice. Maybe Dad will let you use a Bay.

Re: Garage Update

That's a fine workspace. You'll get a lot of good work done in there.

We're in the planning process now. I'm looking at a nice 22/26 garage with the archetect right now. It will have a little offset for my motorcycle stuff, too.

Very exciting, I've had it with the cold asphalt repair work outside! :wall:

And, I'm also looking for another LBC. It will be a very fun summer for yours truly. :savewave:

Re: Garage Update

Tim and Mark (and anybody else thinking about a NEW garage or even a re-model):

When we first bought this place and before I went into business I had this HUGE and basically BARREN and UN-car work friendly garage. As I re-modeled to make the area into a workable place I took a BUNCH of pics which are in an album. I have loaned the thing out so much that the pics are now in a SECOND album!! :jester: It has been in 22 States!!  :thirsty:

It IS available to any one that would like to get ideas by writing me DIRECT at shop@justbrits.com and Tim you could have first and then pass on to Mark or vice-versa!!

If someone wants after you two, just write me direct as above.

You could say pics are WELL-TRAVELED !!

Ed,

Thanks for the offer but I'm gonna respectfully decline. I'd be too concerned about losing your pictures.

At any rate, I've been working in garages for alot of years and seen many others. My plans are pretty well formed and the current set up isn't really so bad as long as my boys and I pick up after ourselves! :nonono:

My current garage is 900 square feet, insulated, heated, and has a second garage door in the back wall for drive through access to the back yard, air system, MIG and gas welding equipment, roll around tool boxes and work benches, powder coat booth and oven, sound system, TV and a Macintosh computer, even a coffee pot! :square:)

Plans include:

Revamp the current air system
Add a small attached shed for the air compressor and minimal storage
Revamp the current electrical system
Panel the interior (paneling and pegboard)
Build an A-frame for the electric hoist (even the normal engine hoists are getting to be a pain when I can a cheap overhead...)
Install the chassis dyno I picked up a couple of months ago in the floor
Do the U-Coat-It thing on the floor. (and U-Coat-It is local to me)
Lastly, install a two-post lift when I get around to it...

May even put some concrete in the back yard for hard stand storage of vehicles, trailers, boat, etc.

I highly suspect that I'll be spending more and more time out there in the future as I get closer to retirement and then finally do retire.

Take care and best wishes!!

Tim

Re: Garage Update

Tim,
Looks like you've covered the bases. I'm in the middle of a new garage project myself; building from the ground up, so I've tried to anticipate as many needs as possible, such as the extra footings under the slab where the two post lift columns will sit. Wall height will be 10' with a tray ceiling, giving 13' over the lift.

As I read through your list I did a mental check of the items on mine:

---

***Revamp the current air system - check - I've got a 3 cylinder, 80 gallon compressor coming to replace the smaller unit (I'll keep it for use in the wood shop).

***Add a small attached shed for the air compressor and minimal storage - check - mine is 8x10 and attached to the rear wall of the shop; doors open to the outside. Insulated just like the shop for both temp control and sound deadening.

***Revamp the current electrical system - check - wiring for both 120V and 240V in both walls and ceiling. Plenty of outlets and recoil extensions.

***Panel the interior (paneling and pegboard) - check - I'm actually going to sheetrock and paint the interior with gloss white to increase the light and cut down on dust. I've purchased a wall full of cabintes with doors for storage of tools...that should help cut down on dust as well. Also, a new roll around, LARGE, tool box.

***Build an A-frame for the electric hoist (even the normal engine hoists are getting to be a pain when I can a cheap overhead...) - check - I'm adding additional bracing in the roof joists and hanging a couple overhead chain hoists/winches.

***Install the chassis dyno I picked up a couple of months ago in the floor - you've got me there...no dyno.

***Do the U-Coat-It thing on the floor. (and U-Coat-It is local to me) - check - I'm doing U-Coat-It with the flake finish; there's a dealer less than an hour from me.

***Lastly, install a two-post lift when I get around to it... - check - I'm installing an Atlas 9000 that is available for a most reasonable price (new) from an equipment dealer located right down the street from the U-Coat-It store...should pick up both items the same day. Happens that the equipment dealer also discounts all the major garage tools, items such as oil drains, metal work benches, wheel dollies, etc.

***May even put some concrete in the back yard for hard stand storage of vehicles, trailers, boat, etc. - check - When they poured the concrete drive to the new garage I had it the full building width (24') and then added 8' for my car hauler to sit. Also going to have the electrician bury a cable and put a power post by the trailer spot.

---

***I highly suspect that I'll be spending more and more time out there in the future as I get closer to retirement and then finally do retire. - check - Retired in August of '06...looking forward to MANY very good days in the new shop!

By the way, there's detail of my new garage/shop at:

Re: Garage Update

Hay Ray, is it too late to add some stairs into the overhead for storage? Could also put a dormer window on the back for light.

Re: Garage Update

My GarageMahal has a mind of its own & just expands at will...right now its trying to figure out how to get the MGA Coupe inside!

Re: Garage Update

Up, think up.

Re: Garage Update

Hey my little shed is going to be 40 x 48 1950sq ft and 14' tall, so I am already planning on an upstairs strorage area  Always thingk up!

Concrete is gonna be the killer, I think I estimated 40 yards of concrete is what I'll need.

A little at a time, and it will be done before you know it. I still have my "Man Cave" (34' RV) after getting married last month. And she is all for the shed
Life is good.

Wait till I show you the 100 gallon pressure sandblaster I am making (Rust, what rust))))
