Future LBC owner checking in... seeking advice!

Greetings! I am currently in the market for a LBC. I currently drive a 1993 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 2 (coupe) on the weekends when the sun is out... I have had the British Car bug for quite awhile and am fortunate enough to have the funds to purchase one at this time.

Question for the group: I have a budget of around $15K. I am looking for a drophead/convertible from the 60's. I am currently looking at TR4s, TR250s or MGBs up to 1967. Some weird quirks:

- I only want a car where the seats have no headrests
- Looking for decent power but nothing crazy
- A car which will give me the true LBC experience

I am open to recommendations on what to look for and any advice is welcome. I look forward to hearing from you folks!

Thanks in advance for any help. :thankyousign:

Cheers,

You can guess where I'm coming from.
Welcome to the forum; the immense resource of skewed opinions available here will, I'm certain, more than satisfy your quest for suggestions. :jester:

Welcome!

All of the cars you've listed will give you a true LBC "experience".

The Triumphs you listed may tend to be older and a little more rare. And both of these TRs use a separate frame and body (some folks like this because it's easier to remove the body for restoration). The TR-250 uses independent rear suspension (IRS). Some later TR4s use this IRS too, but most are solid axle.

The MBG is unibody and far more common because they were built much longer ('62 to '80). Since there a decent amount of parts interchange on MGBs, you'll find parts a little easier to find. All MGBs are solid axle.

The MGB will be slightly lighter. The 6 cylinder TR-250 will be the best highway cruiser, but a TR4 or MGB with overdrive won't be bad.

Most of slightly newer versions (like my '69 MGB roadster) have removeable head rests, so that's not really a big deal. And it would be easy to install the old style seats in a newer car too.

As with ALL older cars, rust is the real enemy. I'd rather a car with a weak engine than a weak body.

Go throught the classified section here at BCF. You may see something! (there's a rather nice looking '67 MGB on there right now and it's in your price range. It appears to be in the northeast USA).

G'luck!

Hi There Pat, :savewave:

"Welcome" to the wonderful world of "LBCs".

Its too bad you were`nt here approx. 6 months ago as I had a super sweet `66TR4A-IRS for sale. "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda":

Anyways, for $15K you should be able to get yourself a really nice "TR4/4A" driver. The "TR250s" are bringing in $$$ from $15-$20+K for a decent driver.

Relative to the MG class; The "MGBs" are considerably less than what you want to spend but at the same time don`t seem to appreciate as the Triumphs. I guess cause there are just "SOOO" many of them out there! On the other hand; An "MGA" keeps rising in value. You should be able to find one in your price range if your patient. If you want to go a few more $$$, look for a "Twin Cam" MGA (Kind of Rare).

I`m sure you have checked out the classifieds here, ebay and local clubs. All of which will give you a pretty good idea of what you can buy & for how much.

Happy Hunting, :driving:

Regards, Russ

Welcome from Central Virginia-soon to be home of Moss Motors East. For $15k you can get an early MGB in near perfect condition or a TR6 in very good condition. Check Hemmings.com, craigslist in your area, most of the club sites have a classified section, local newspaper, these internet forms usually have trader sections, etc. Go to the shows, too. Often times cars are for sale there. I found mine within 60 miles of home on Hemmings.

Here's an interesting MGB on ebay.
