Anyone using a Sony AM/FM CD player in their Spridget. 200W/4 speakers=50 watts per channel. Manual doesn't give fuse size only to say do not exceed fuse rating that came with the unit. Manual shows a Fuse mounted in side of the chassis labelled as 10W. Now of course I don't want to unwire and take apart the radio console to see if there really is a 10 Watt fuse in there.

Now from my old Radio Shack days of 25 no 30 years ago, car audio did not exceed 3 watt fuses. I tried crank up the volume the other day top see how the Miata Seat Headrest Speakers sounded with the 6 x 9's in the back deck. Well they sounded absolutely awesome for about 2 seconds when the power fuse popped. I've got a 3 watt fuse in there that obviously is not up to the load I just placed on my music source. I just can't believe this thing takes a 10 watt fuse.

Tuneless but don't want to let the smoke out!
 
my stereo uses a 20 i believe....
im sure 3 is way too small,
dont worry about it....use the 10 ......z

Thanks guys. Like I said, I want the tunes but not the smoke. Got the console out and even found a bare hot wire back there that might have been causing an issue. Crunched the insulation off I'm guessing getting console in and out a couple of times. That's fixed and 3 watt fuse back in place pending further info. I did mange to move the fuse holder so it's accessible without needing the remove rthe console to get access, brillant idea on my part on my original engineering.

Now on to the next challenge to replace the choke cable. PITA part lasted all of two months before handle popped off. Haven't been able to test out Bugsy's new Harley Muffler on the road yet. This weekend is coming and Bugsy is getting closer to being back on the road where he belongs. Thanks
 
Jim, my Sony AM/FM CD player has a 1 amp fuse. One. I've had that stereo in 3 different cars and never blew the fuse.
 
The fuse should be rated in amps not watts, but take the watts and divide by 12 volts and that will give you amps. 10/12=.83 amps. Probably a 1 amp fuse will be ok. The fuse is there to protect your car not your stereo. There might be a reason for the blown fuse. Also something doesn't sound right here. If you have 50X4 then that is 200 watts peak 200/12= 17amps.

That's the problem. I know it should be in Amps and the book shows a picture of a fuse and it is labeled 10W. I love the instructions, always replace fuse with same sized fuse as was originally installed. I did find however a bare wire behind the Radio Console that could be the source of the problem. Wire was crammed in and insulation had been stripped off of the wire by contact with something. Fixed and replaced and added another 3 Amp fuse. Radio works again.
