TR5/TR250 Funny sounds from gear shift

I know that I need to rebuild the transmission in the 250. I have been waiting for it to "let go" .
What I have noticed that if I keep my hand on the gear shift knob I get a sound like a throw out bearing spinning. But when I take my hand off the gear shift knob it stops. I know the tranny needs a complete rebuild, but what do you all think the noise could be?
 
Sound of the TOB being conducted through your arm? Or any other bearing. Most solid objects conduct sound more efficiently than air does.

At the Edison Museum in Florida, there is a phonograph that he fitted with extra wood so he could bite it to hear better. (Not really relevant, Edison was almost deaf, but interesting IMO.)
 
Make sure the shift knob is tight on the lever. Even a slight looseness can cause rattle snake like noises.

I would guess you are pulling the brass shifting fork onto the gear slot and that the brass fork is worn down and howling. I have seen them worn thinner on a tr3 anyway. So maybe the brass shifter is bad and not the whole tranny
 
I completely understand Dan/tinman. I have been meaning to ask this same question. My Tr250 did the same thing for years and all I had to do is put a finger on the shifter and there would be a swishing/winning sound that would come from the shifter. My transmission doesn't need overhauled but this sound bothered me for years. No one could explain it. Now this past winter I installed a new not rebuilt slave cylinder and is the only thing that has been done to the transmission. I have not noticed the sound since I've installed the new slave cylinder. Maybe the pushrod was too tight and moderately engaging the TOB and like Randal said the harmonics traveling though my arm (bones are solid objects)to my head and into the ear canal amplified the sounds. May explain the loss of many teeth fillings too over the years.
