Yesterday I went to start Midge & drive to work, I turned the key & I heared the starter spinning but not turning the car over... so I shut the garage door & drove the civic to work... not nearly as much fun to drive - Last night I used the pushbutton on the solienoid & noticed that the stub on the starter was spinning, then I turned the motor over via the fan blade & could hear something clicking on the ring gear, then turned it over the other direction & the clicking would go away - decided it was time to pull the starter (that was an enjoyable task... once I took the distributer cap off & removed the coil it came out okay... wouldn't come out from underneath)
Once removed I noticed that the nut on the end of the starter had lost it's cotter pin & back off to holding by about one thread, also the spring was broken... oops I guess this is why it wouldn't engage !
Last year the starter made an awfull sound once & then seemed okay afterwards... I guess this was the start of it's demise, strange, the last time it turned over I didn't notice anything, then the next time I turned it over - nothing ! thankgoodness it was in my garage & not in some parking lot !
So tonight I will drive to my storage shed location & retrive my spare rebuilt starter, then I should be good to go again.
ahhh the joys
