Fun With Contact Cement On My Dash

WELL, am I ever learning a bunch. When I prepared my dash I primered the back and left the front cleaned but natural. Following suggestions from several forum members I finally got the front glued into place. I turned it over and started on the back. A more tedious area to work I might add. Based on the directions on the back of the brushable Weldwood contact cement I should wait at least 15 min before joining the fabric to the dash that's what I did with the front and it worked fine. I did that and went on to something else and later found that the solvents in the glue melted the primer and it did not stick.
I called the Weldwood Tech line and they told me to wait anywhere from 1/2 to 1 hour for it to dry. I re-glued, waited about 35 40 min. and it worked fine.
Just thought I would pass that along for any one's future use.

Cheers, Tinkerman

Good knowledge I kinda found out that that amount of time wasn't a problem by working on some trim that took along time and really if anything it worked better that way than the recommended 15 minutes. Post some picks of your dash work, that's my next project.

A lot depends on ambient temp and humidity with that contact cement, too. The "touch test" is a good way to determine whether it's time or not. "dry" to touch is when to bring the two pieces together, usually.
i.e. not sticking to your finger on light touch.
