what do I do if such a mistake should happen (putting petrol into a diesel car)? i heard alot of stories about people making this mistake ... anyone knows something about the possible damage it could cause to an engine?

How much petrol to diesel,
Not a good idea, running it at all, a friend of mine did it, maybe 5 litre of petrol, but then filled it up with diesel, then run it dry.
Thought he had got away with it, a month later there was a pool of oil on the drive from the turbo.
may or may have not been related, but i would imagine the raised exhaust temp from the petrol could have blown the turbo seals.

Smell nozzle before putting in filler. If the mistake happens and you catch it, tow home and drain immediately, pour fresh gas, infected fuel line at engine and pump the fresh gas into a can. If it smells like gasoline refasten lines, add injector cleaner to fuel, then run.
