Fuel "thing" horror

If you decide to go with a modern pump, Facet/Purlator has a newer black model that's much quieter than the old cube for about the same price. I'd prefer to spend a few dollars more for a Carter inline pump. I think they are about $60 at NAPA.

I put one of those on the '79 I used to have....how's that pump doing Tony?

And if you like, and for particularly messy jobs, you can double glove by puting another one over the first.

That way you have twice the protection, and if the outer one gets filty or rots in the gas you can peel it off and still have some protection....

I do this a lot with nasty paint stripper more than just plain ole gas....

I wouldn't mess with the metal lines - I would, however, replace all the flexible ones when you put a new pump on (oh, turn your head sideways while you're under there & look at the condition of the flexible rear brake lines also).

Much to the chagrin of some of my fellow BCFers I took this route. Car had sat for 8 years and this was all it took to make her run again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I replaced the leaky horror with a Facet pump from PepBoys ($32 complete with fuel filter).

So how much noise comes from the new style Facet. I know it will be hard to compare to the old one since they were mounted differently... but what do you think so far?
 
Julian - again, thanks for the timely advice. My SU fuel pump is currently flopping around in the trunk so your neat and efficient (not to say cheap) solution is food for thought. The '75 appears to have a different set up but I have not had the time to look underneath.

I'd say it's noisier than the old one, but that may be because it isn't leaking :smile: The old one was dangling from a loose bolt, whereas the new one is firmly attached in two places to a forward strut of the battery compartment. Ideally one would use a couple of rubber bushes, e.g. fan mountings, I suppose.

It was an easy, and satisfying, little job. I trimmed the metal fuel lines a little to remove some kinks I didn't like the look of, using a small pipe cutter I got at Sears. A neat little tool, and so much better than hacking away with a hacksaw :smile:

I've been using a Facet for ... uhm ... a little over a year now I suppose. I can tell ya now that they are loud. Not necessarily intrusively loud, but they are loud. Mine is currently "zip tied" to the old SU pump mounting brackets, which may help with the noise these things develop. I ~normally~ don't notice the pump while the engine is running, but lately I've started noticing it while idling at lights. It's a very different sound from the SU pumps as well. With the SU pumps you get the 'tick'; with these Facet pumps you get something analogous to a muffled low pressure air pump. And holy jeebus you don't wanna let your tank run empty with those Facet pumps either. If a SU pump runs dry, there's very little change in sound, if a Facet runs dry it sounds like someone just jumped in your trunk with a jack hammer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I'm currently considering switching back to an SU pump with all the proper mounting gear for my year car. Since I've gotten my car, I've found more 'off year' parts used on the car and engine than I care to count. It's not because I want to keep the car "original"; it's more because I want to keep things as easy as possible to work on.

I mounted a Facet pump on "Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers" used on Diesela to hold down the air cleaner. Same "bobbin" used on VW's to hold radiators in place, mount Porsche fuel pumps... They're great for insulating the "thrubbing" of the Facet. Oh, and I mounted it in the now-unused right side battery box.

I'm considering goin' all "rallye" with a spare one plumbed up and on a switch to change over if the first one starts actin' th' goat... had it happen more'n once with SU pumps. Once had to go "the other half" of Alligator Alley whacking the rear bulkhead with my surrogate E-brake (large granite rock!)... not a "fun" trip.
 
I know the old Facets are noisy. That's what I have on the Mini and the GT6. I did a better job of isolating the mounts for the GT6 and hardly notice it. I'm mainly interested in a comparison of the noise level of these new plastic bodied pumps compared to the older stamped square metal ones.

I started out with a Carter gear-rotor pump on the GT6 but I discovered that IF you let the fuel filter plug before the pump, the pump will burn up (because the pump is cooled by the flowing gasoline) before your float bowls can run dry. I found the Carter pump much more pleasant to listen to but at twice the cost it wasn't practical to replace it with another Carter until all the loose scale was flushed out of my car's tank. I've been running the Facet for over 10 years now so I guess a Carter isn't in my future until the Facet finally dies.
 
I'm curious about the "new" Facet bomba compared to the old "cube" as well. I may go get one and plumb up the rig described above, and could then run 'em side-by-each and have "empirical" info for ya, Doug. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
I got nothin' to compare the plastic bodied pump I have to other than an SU. Everything I said about the Facet pump above is in reference to the plastic/resin bodied version.
