Fuel tank

I have to have the tank on my 6 sent out to have a fuel return feed fitted, as I don't think it has one right now. I need it for some work that I'm doing to it. To go with all the other changes, I also have to fit a fuel pump in the trunk. I saw the "add a return" kits that cut a couple of inches out of the fuel filler hose and don't like them, so I'd like to do it right.

I'm idly curious as to whether anyone has had a custom tank made up and if so what it cost, as I have no clue what I'd be looking at - it would solve some of my other issues though. I'd really like something bigger in the stock location, with swirl pots welded in, and fitted out so that I can have the fuel pump mounted inside the tank out of sight.

I doubt this is something most people have had to think about, but here's hoping...

I'm guessing your concocting some kind of fuel injection setup, as thats the only reason I can think of for a return line.
Try a shop that fabricates heating and ventilation ductwork for buildings. They usually handle fabrication of various tanks and the like.
I would suggest fabricating a tank that would utilise an exesting factory fuel bracket from whatever kind of car has a readily available and cheap setup.(I.E. mustang) that may make your job easier.

Yeah, it's for fuel injection. Concocting is a bit strong - I'm paying for the work to be done as I'm not talented enough to do it myself!

I've found a couple of places online that do fuel tanks for boats - about $800-1000 for what I want, plus pump which is a bit high for my taste. It's nowhere near that for a return bung in the stock one.

Having something a lot bigger would be the main attraction. Hiding the fuel pump is nice, but not essential.

How about trying a racing supply shop or catalog. You could probably get a fuel cell that will accept a pump for a good price. Safer and cheaper, Bonus! You may want to think about mounting the tank down in where the spare tire would go.

I looked.

I don't like the idea that you have to replace the bladder every few years, and I'd like to keep it stock looking as far as I can. You'd also have to open the trunk to fill up, which I'd hate, or concoct a line from the stock fill point which would be a disaster waiting to happen...

Fair enough argument.....

I had a custom 19.5 gallon tank made for my TR6/V8 to fit the same mounting as the old one (but taking up more room in the trunk). If you'd like, I can send you the detailed plans for it and you can have a local fab shop make one for you (a friend made mine, so I can't tell you what it would cost to have it made.

doesn't TRF, Moss or Victoria have replacement tanks?

Yes but the quality isn't that high. From what I have seen the mount points don't always match up(mounting points are the same for TR4-6). The threaded fuel line holes weren't threaded very well and you have to clean out loads of aluminum swaff before you want to put any fuel into them. They also approach or have passed $500 I think. Though they are supposed to be baffled like the later TR6 tanks.

I already have a perfectly serviceable fuel tank. The real advantage of custom is that it can be a lot bigger and I can hide the fuel pump.

Dan, if you have dimensions that would be incredibly useful.
I can get prices easily then - I don't have access to my car to measure right now.

I have one of the aluminum fuel tanks that Moss sells. I came with extra holes for electric fuel pump. I had those all welded up. The tank fit well, was quite clean and did have a setup they called a baffle, albeit just a small piece of pipe welded over the exit hole. Serves me well.

My original tank was shot.
