No David, the fuel gauge is so unreliable that when it gets to one quarter of a tank I just pull in and fill er up. My Missus taught me that. I use to see how far the Healey would run on fumes. You know what!, the next gas station can be a mile away--- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The gauge on my MGB reads 1/8th of a tank when its empty. My dad ran out a long time ago on my car and told me the gauge didn't read empty. Took me five years to find out exactly where it was. I've filled my car up several times were it works out that I only had about a half gallon left in the tank. Now I know exactly how far I can go on a tank!

davidk,the usual excepted method of not allowing your healey to run out of fuel is to fill the tank when the guage reads 1/4 as mentioned here,last year when i picked up the healey i now own the fuel guage read 3/4 full but i non the less filled the tank for the drive from tappan n.j. back home to stamford ct.lucky i did so because while driving around my home town and sitting at a traffic light the car began to sputter then stopped, yup ran out of fuel,the fuel guage was reading just slightly above 3/4, all the healeys ive owned never had an accurate guage but this one was the worst, the 1/4 and then fill method allways worked and was acceptable but now something had to be done,i found an article on an m.g sight turns out m.gs have the same fuel guage, by following the simple "tuning" insructions i got my guage to read as close to spot on as this system will allow most guys wont like to do this since it requires removal of the unit i dont know why because its simple to do,check it out at https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/electr_1.htm - scroll down to fg 101 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
Calibrating the gauge is pretty easy. You need a couple of 68 ohm resistors (Radio Shack sells 5 for a buck). The instructions are pretty easy. Now the gauge is still going to bounce around alot, but you should be able to get it calibrated so the full reads pretty close to F and empty reads close to E.
