Fuel Tank and Pump?

All,

Thanks for the continued flow of information, insights and Healey humor. 2 years into resorting this BN1 and ready for the next adventure on the Fuel System. Was wondering if you had opinions on restoring vs buying a new fuel tank? Current tank seems original with no holes but lots of rust and who knows what else inside. Is it worth the hassle to refurbish one of these?

Also looking to add a new fuel pump and looking at the single ended negative ground electronic pump from Moss, any experiences with these?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Michael, There are some excellent prices on very good new tanks on E-bay. IMOP an old rusty tank is just another head ache. The Negative ground electronic fuel pump is the only way to fly.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

Hi Michael,
Nice looking car so far.

I think you would be far ahead, in the long run, to get a new tank. I strongly suggest an aluminum tank while you are at it.

The old tank is likely to be pretty thin in some spots. There are several internal baffles plus the permanently attached outlet pipe that make cleaning the inside a problem.

I'm sure that a few folks have used the cleaning & reline kits on old tanks. This can be a real war & in my mind doubtful how long the sealer will last before it starts coming loose & blocking the fuel system.

With aluminum there will be no worry about future rust.

Get a new tank you won`t be sorry, I went through 2 spare tanks that I had and was never hapy. I bought one from e bay and it worked just fine. Skip

M,

I replaced using a steel one. Probably from Moss but cannot verify. I am happy with it except that the sending unit periodically seeps if I over fill (top off). I remove, reseal and that issue goes away.

Replace would be my recommendation.

comment which may interest. I stayed with the original tank after some professional work was done on it. On final restoration the car('63 BJ7) would not run for more than 2 mls.: no gas! After much heartbreak /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifump? tank venting?: I found there was a filter inside the tank which was 'somewhat clogged' with the sealer we used.Should have suspected non-standard as the outlet fitting was welded in place.Replaced with correct fitting :1000+ happy miles since then.
