MGB Fuel sender '71 MGB

Hi guys and gals:
I just got a new fuel sender from VB and hope to install it tomorrow. It has a rubber gasket and a locking ring to hold it in. Before I take the old one out I'd like to understand how the locking ring holds it. Any explaination assistance?? Thanks.

Gary

Gary, assuming it is the same as the Midget, it is just a friction fit, you tap out the old ring by essentially turning about 1/8 to the left, you tap in the new one same way. That's the easy part.

Not sure how big 'B tanks are, but, one of my "to do" jobs on Ms Triss is to drop the tank and bend the arm on the sender as it touches the bottom of the tank too soon. This means the car is empty and 1/4 tank. Also, make sure everything is well grounded and this is a PITA to do twice.

Thanks JP...I'm not really sure what you mean by "tap out the old ring and tap in the new one" but I guess "tap" means the turning out and in...right? Then the sender sort of "attaches" to the ring?

The send goes in the hole, the ring covers it and slides under the notches on the tank. Think of it as how you take the top off a smoke detector, turn, and pull. It is essentially a friction fit.

Thanks JP...it was easier than I expected. Just curious about one thing...any idea what the purpose of the little rubber gasket-looking thingy on the float is?

Keeps the float from thumping/lying on the tank bottom, making noise and abrading the float.

Thanks Doc...AND I now have a working fuel gauge !! This is great. Very simple install.

woo hoo, Gary has gas and he knows it!

Ya...knowing you have gas (in a car !) is good.

Having a working gauge is no certainty of that.
