Fuel Question from newbie

Basil, sorry and I shall stop my ribbing. My take on it is. It is like treating the symptom and not dealing with the root problem if it concerns you that much. Steven I was just kidding you all along and if I offended you I apologise.

Steven,

Hey whats wrong with my typewriter? As to my comment about unions I was refering to that fact that they have contributed greatly to increasing costs in the workpalce by lobbying for protective measures for workers. And there by helping make industrial enterprises look elsewhere to manufacture their products. Never said the unions were a bad thing.

Cheers,

apology accepted jv....and one might remember that OIL was once called snake oil. That's where that term came from. It was thought to be only for medicinal purposes.
I find it real difficult to believe that Britain is that far behind us in the gasoline refining situation. That has to be pure "poppycock."
My motor was rebuilt in 1984 when a major engine overhaul was done by a Jaguar dealer. If I could do it all over I would have gotten the hardened valves...but I distinctly remember the Jaguar mechanic telling me to never use unleaded fuel, and when leaded regular was eliminated, to ALWAYS use lead additive. Now...are you going to argue with a Jaguar mechanic's advice too?..I'm not!

Hello Baxter,
add up 6 x seats, machine, fit and machine the seat angles, 6 x bronze valve guides fitted, 6 x stainless exhaust valves, new springs, 1 x head gasket set. I will do it when the head wears out and then do it properly, it is not just fitting the seats themselves.
Also bear in mind some of the older cars are not suitable for the fitting of seat inserts, so additives are the only route.

Rest your case on what?
The fact that a Jaguar mechanic, 10 years after unleaded became unavailable in this country, made the ill-advised and highly questionable decision NOT to install hardened seats?

Or on the cost of an inflated quote to convert? You don't need stainless valves or new springs to run unleaded.

Or on the fact that a handful of truly geriatric and archaic designs from before WWII can't be fitted to hardened seats. Certainly doesn't apply to any MG, Triumph or Austin Healey in the states.

Where the heck do you live Baxter? You could buy leaded regular here until 1992. That would be 8 years after I had the motor rebuilt. The guy did a **** good job with no apologies necessary. Seems to me you have some kind of flipping ego problem, and your "facts" are WAY off base. Before I go and call you a diphead....I'll surf to another forum.

Thanks Baxter, I think you finaly made him stop. I wonder why he's so angry?

Basil I think Steve must have missed your first post. Or maybe it's A.D.D. or "lead poisoning"

Stop what? I got bored with the ravings of a moron. Seems like you admire him though jv. Does that stand for junior varsity? Cause you're certainly not ready for much more than that. And seeing that Baxter guys from Texas explains about all i need to know. You 2 have been making light of what i said all day now. I was hoping you'd stop being jerks. I saw the post the moderator put up there..then you too porch monkeys started it right back up again.
What kind of a person makes an apology, then jumps right back in to cause a problem again...JV? I hereby rescind my acceptance of your apology. You 2 guys suck.

The day you could recognize class is the day they let one too many out of the trailer park. Go ahead and close the thread. This guy's beginning to **** me off.

Hey Guys,

Before this really gets out of hand with the name calling can we just call it quits. There are two sides to the arguement and it is just getting way to out of proportion. I think we all just need to take a step back and think about what we are argueing about here its just valve seats, and lead additives.

Cheers,

To ALL- I don't care who's right or who's wrong. STOP THE FLAMES or go find a different forum. Period.

Basil

I just deleted two posts. I will have the last word in this thread, thank you very much.

Oh and by the way Steven I use Testors and a roller to paint my cars (sure takes a lot of those little bottles to fill a paint bucket). You will have to excuse me now as I have to go renew my receded valve seats.

Hello all,
a couple of points,
leaded fuel was not withdrawn because of poisoning of humans, just poisoning of catalytic converters. The fact that unleaded fuel is a more unpleasant and carcinogenic fuel seems to be irrelevant and that it is less efficient is also ignored.
I use an additive in my Triumph, in the UK the usual additives are either manganese or phosphorous although recently there has been a lead additive marketed.
As to cost versus doing the head, I guess that I'm looking at about £400 to have the work done, about 40,000 miles at £2.00 per additive per tankful of fuel.
There have been scientific tests carried out and to run a car with soft seats on unleaded fuel without an additive is foolhardy. The criteria is how hard the car is driven, drive it hard, (as a TR should be) and the valve seats will be destroyed perhaps in 10,00 miles or less.

A couple of observations about this thread. It seems to be getting off the topic if answering the man's question.

First, there are going to be different opinions in answering jerrybny's question. State your opinion and present whatever facts you want to support your opinion. Jerry will have to weight the merits of each opinion and decide for himself. If you disagree with a poster, that's fine, but do so respectfully. It is my experience that no one person knows everything, but some think they do.

Second, I don't tolorate personal attacks for very long on this forum - its one of the reasons you don't see a lot of flamimg here. Call it one of my personal failings, but I have a low threashold for such things. If you have some factual argument to make, that's fine, but don't engage in personal attacks.

I know that sometimes things are said in jest and sometimes taken out of context and taken to be real flames. So please be mindful of how your post will be perceived remembering that such things as inflection and context are often lost in a black and white post on a forum.

Thanks,
Basil
