Fuel Pump

Wouldn't you know... I am preparing for Triumphest and want the fuel pumps to not seep gas on the starter of my Spitifres. I have quarter inch hose, quarter inch steel tube, brass rings and still the connections leak. On one car there is a seep on the fuel in side. On the other, the gas squirts out from the tube on the line to the carbs. Both Spit Bits and Rimmer Bros show a tube and a compression ring to connect the tube in and out of the mechanical fuel pump. What am I missing? T.T.

I have trouble with the fittings on my MkI. I have asked for help in the past and got no real help. I cannot figure out what type of threads or in the pump hsopusing or what type of fittings should be used. The newest fuel pumps have hose barbs built into the pump, so you just use a hose clamp on a fuel hose.

Dunno if this applies to Spits; but on the TR2-4 the original compression rings were shaped differently (making them effectively larger) than the ones available today. If you try to use a modern compression ring, frequently the nut will bottom in the threads before it compresses the ring enough for a good seal.
Can't find the link at the moment, but there is a web site somewhere showing how to siamese two sleeves together. Basically you file/grind/sand away the tapered portion on one side of each of two sleeves, then install them both with the now flat sides together.

What I did was turn a nut on the lathe with an extended tip to compress a regular ring. If your old nut is in good condition (mine wasn't), you might be able to just file away the last thread at the tip and accomplish the same thing.

This is from memory. At least one of the standard threads is 1/4” BSP “British Standard Pipe” maybe both. As I remember it, they are parallel threads, i.e. BSPP, not tapered threads, i.e. BSPT. I have "rubber" hose fuel lines on both supply and delivery. On my spare generic fuel pump I have two brass 1/4” BSPT hose barbs, one with 1/4” hose connection (delivery side) and the other with a 5/16” connection (supply side.) I remember that I could only get taper threaded hose barbs and had to re-cut them to parallel threads. I also seem to remember that one side was obviously 1/4” BSP but the other was not so “easy.” Hope this helps in some fashion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I called Spit Bits and ordered the nuts and ferrules tht should be the right size. I think I spent more on the shipping than the parts. I have to drive one of the cars on a camping trip this weekend. Then we need to put some miles on it before we drive to Triumphset.
T.T.
