Ray - The symptoms you describe are not fuel delivery symptoms. I'm with the rest of the guys on this one, it is some kind of an electrical problem. Once you get it sorted, you might want to test the old fuel pump by attaching it directly to a battery. Its my guess that you will fid that it runs fine. That said, at 27 years old, it probably needs to be replaced or restored anyway.
