The last few times my BN6 was driven back in the fall, the fuel pump was acting up, occasionally requiring a few love taps on the bulkhead behind the drivers seat to unstick the points. I purchased a new pump, figuring I would install the new one, and hopefully fix the old one and keep it handy as a spare. Now here's my question...it appears that access to the fasteners that secure the pump to the chassis are only accessable from within the cockpit...and only by peeling up layers of beautiffuly installed and I think glued carpet (this is a professionally restored car).Am I correct about this? I thought of removing the bracket to which the pump is attached, but the bracket appears to be welded to the chassis. Oh and I suppose that the moment I disconnect the inlet pipe, fuel will spill all over the place...better have a cork handy. Any words of wisdom/encouragement will be appreciated, thanks.
 
I don't think there is any other way. Carefully peel the carpet back far enough to access the bolt heads. You can glue it back with contact cement. I said to heck with originality, reglued the carpet, made holes for the bolts, & access the bolts the normal way. You can stick a cork in the inlet pipe or just break the siphon by blowing back into the pipe.

Hey Dave, thanks for the reply...but guess what...upon closer inspection I discovered that the folks who installed the carpet created two carpet "plugs", one over each of the fuel pump bolt heads. How cool is that! They are fitted so perfectly to holes in the carpet so as to be nearly undetectable. Anyway that problem is solved. Another question though; I noticed that the current pump does not have an earth wire. Does this matter? should I install one on the new pump? seems to me that the pump is making "earth" contact with the chassis without a wire?
 
Doesn't matter, the pump is making "earth" contact through the metal to metal contact with the mount. You can put a ground wire on if you just feel like doing something extra.
